If you are thinking about getting a computer you might be considering used computers - tips when buying one. There are many places you can buy a used computer these days. And there are many reasons you might want to buy a used computer verses a brand new computer. But most people consider money saving to be at the top of the list of reasons to buy a used one.

You might be starting your school or business year. Either way you will need money for a lot of other reasons so you might want to save money buying a used computer.

You probably have looked at the prices of new computers and figure if you can spend maybe a third of that price and get a reliable used computer then you will be able to save a lot of money. You are not alone. If you were then the used computer market would not be so big. Of course you do not want to end up buying a defective used computer and then have to go out and buy a brand new computer to replace your bad decision.

For the sake of your bank account you want to choose carefully. You want to look at top brand models only when looking at the used computer selection. These brands have easy to find parts. Also they still might have a warranty in effect. If something goes bad on the model you might have to pay only a small processing fee to have the component replaced or you might have no cost at all.

This is a computer that has been refurbished, usually by the manufacturer, with new components. These computers also come with a warranty of some sort although not as long or extensive as it did when it was brand new. Refurbished computers might be more expensive than used computers but are less expensive than a brand new computer.

You will want to ask the store you are buying from if the computer is used or refurbished. If you are looking a used computer you will want to make sure that it boots up correctly. That is a problem most used computers will have. You then want to make the mouse is working correctly, especially on a lap top computer. You will want to make sure the key board is working correctly.

Check the video, sound devices and graphics. They all should be in proper working order. You may be looking at a stolen computer and not know it. Make sure you get for your money all the related software documents and licenses to the computer. You want to buy from someone who will agree to you having the computer for a few days to make sure it is running smoothly.

Take the computer to someone you trust who knows about computers and let him check it out. A used computer may be the best bargain for you if you are careful when you buy it. But you do not want to make a bad choice and then have to spend money to replace it with a new computer.
