PC Desktops: What to Look For

By Matthew Kerridge

Among so many PC desktops on the market, choosing just one is not an easy job. There are a few things that you should consider to help you make your decision.

Of course, you want to think about how you are going to use your computer. But spend the time doing this before you begin to shop. It is all too easy to either over buy or under buy if you have not really determined your needs.

If your computer will be used primarily for basic emails, documents and spreadsheets, a basic system will suffice. If, on the other hand, you will be using more intense audio and graphic applications, you will have to invest in a faster and more powerful system that can handle those capabilities. You do not want to buy based on possible needs very far in the future as computer technology tends to progress quite rapidly.

With a basic system, you will not need a super processor. Any dual-core processor will be sufficient for your needs. However, if you are going to be using applications that use a lot of graphics such as video editing or gaming, you are going to need something more powerful such as a four-core processor.

System memory can be added later easily. However, it is a good idea to get what you think you will need along with the rest of the system. This is going to have to open and operate all your applications, so keep that in mind while making your decision.

For the hard drive memory needs, this again depends on how you will be using your computer. For basic files such as documents and spreadsheets, you don't need a lot of room. If you are going to be saving movies and graphic files on your hard drive, these can take up a huge amount of space, and again it is far better to start with an ample amount.

Another consideration is the ports available. You want to be sure you have enough USB ports for all the things you will need to connect, as well as FireWire ports. Again, the key is to flesh out how you plan on using your computer first and what you may want to connect such as printers and external hard drives. You always want to leave room for expansion such as the ability to add a graphics card if your needs change later.

Whatever your computer needs, you will find many PC desktops that fit the bill. And there will be plenty of options in your price range. - 30431
