Inexpensive Computing Made Possible By Use Of Netbook Computers

By Nick Cantos

You may have seen the small computers that are only nine to ten inches in size. While very small, these netbook computers are very powerful machines that use newer technology to keep them affordable for most people.

You will not find many of the items in these computers that you would normally find in a notebook or desktop computer. The first thing you may miss is the optical reading device. Instead programs are downloaded from the internet or through a USB drive.

In fact, though not visible, some of these computers do not have a traditional hard drive, but have a solid state memory that serves as the hard drive. This is the same memory used in the thumb drives and is smaller and lighter in weight, but does not contain as much memory as the typical new laptop computer.

The good news is that the machines can use USB hard drives if there is the need for more memory. Prices for external hard dives with more memory have dropped in the past few years. Now a 1 TB (that is 1000 GB) hard drive can be bought for under $100.

You will not find a phone modem capability for most of the smaller computers either, although all of these computers that are now being sold are equipped with WiFi connections. For home use, you will need a wireless router, but in public, the computer can access the web at almost any hot spot.

Originally, these computers were sold with older versions of Windows or a Linux operating systems. The Windows operating systems were XP and Linux were little known systems. Today they are sold with the current operating systems used on other computers.

Prices on netbook computers began to fall around Christmas of 2008. As prices continue to fall, some will sell for under $175 on Black Friday of 2009.

The small size of these computers makes it easy to transport them either in a purse or a brief case. Even though they are small, there are many uses for these netbook computers. This makes them very useful on business trips, where the owner can continue to check e-mail and other correspondence with his or her office.

As more applications become web based, netbook computers become even more useful. With web based applications, files can be stored on a web server from a desk top computer and then accessed using the netbook for a remote meeting. You can work from anywhere you have an available connection. Mobile internet service allows you to connect to your files from almost any location that you have cellular phone coverage.

Netbooks are becoming very popular as a first computer. Their smaller size makes it easier for little hands to learn the keyboard and teens like the computers for the small size and convenient carrying. Online features give access to favorite online games, research and many other resources. When homework is prepared on the netbook, it can be printed on any printer that can be accessed through WiFi. - 30431
